The Wedding Ringer
Michael Cox READ TIME: 2 MIN.
One of the best kept secrets among the rich and friendless is Jimmy Callahan (Kevin Hart) in "The Wedding Ringer."
Doug Harris (Josh Gad) has landed the perfect fiance, Gretchen Palmer (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting). She's what some may call out of his league, and no one is more aware of this than the groom-to-be.
Here's the deal; Doug has invested so much in his education and career that he's never really made any guy friends. When Gretchen asks who his best man will be, Doug creates an imaginary friend inspired buy the labels on his toiletries, Bic Mitchum, and all of his groomsman have the names of Major Leaguers or Hall of Famers.
Doug's sham buddies may fool the woman, but not his deceptively flamboyant wedding planner, Edmundo (Ignacio Serricchio). This guy sees the groom's problem a mile off and brings him into the surreptitious wedding underground.
For a price, Jimmy will be the best best man you ever had -- with a soul condition -- this is only a one-night stand. After the wedding is over, the groom and his "best friend" must go their separate ways.
You may be jaded about weddings, and you may also disparage rom-coms, but even the most cynical bastard's heart will flutter a little for this good old fashion bromance.
Sure the humor gets pretty juvenile toward the middle of the film -- as the bachelor party takes off and the stripper starts using peanut butter to attract a dog toward some otherwise unappealing genitalia -- but Hart is such a charmer, every dude in America wants him to be his best friend. (And Gad is the guy that every dude in America fondly remembers from their "Frozen" and "Book of Mormon: The Musical" soundtracks.)
Fifteen deleted scenes, five outtake reels, a collection of on-set jokes, a featurette, Aloe Blacc's "Can You Do This" music video and select commentary with director Jeremy Garelick and Josh Gad (much of which is exclusive to this Blu-ray) will keep you laughing well after the feature is over.
