Out Olympic diver turned knitting aficionado Tom Daley has announced that he will be hosting a new reality TV series – a knitting competition show.
Per a press release from the U.K.'s Channel 4, the show is tentatively called "Game of Wool" and marks Daley's first presenting gig ever, and his first major job since retiring from diving. The athlete will "welcome 10 ambitious knitters who will take on a series of complex challenges as they compete to become the U.K.'s first TV knitting champion."
The release continues: "Set against the picturesque countryside of rural Scotland, which is steeped in knitting and wool heritage, each episode sees the knitters tackle two challenges: a group knit where they'll be working together in teams on an extremely complex project, as well as an individual knit where they'll take on individual briefs that will really test their capabilities and skill level.
"Each week, the competitors must create a whole host of unique makes and larger than life sculptural pieces – all made from wool. These include clothing, jewelry, home accessories, furniture, sculptures and they may even try their hands at 'yarn bombing.'"
Daley offered a comment about hosting the upcoming series.
"I am very excited, and slightly nervous, to be taking on my first ever hosting role on a project that encompasses everything I'm passionate about," he said. "I adore all things knitting, and encourage everyone to pick up some knitting needles and give it a go!"
Added the champion diver: "I cannot wait to see the creations our knitters will weave together, and hope this inspires people at home to get involved, too!"
The show will also feature judges Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell, who are have established themselves in the knitting world working for fashion brands like Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, NIKE, and more.
Daley also took to Instagram to share the news of his new hosting gig and announce the show, urging fans to apply.
Daley picked up knitting during the COVID pandemic lockdowns and carried on with the hobby during the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games, often making headlines for being spotted in the audience while knitting or for the fun pieces he made.
