My, My, My: Troye Sivan Named GQ Australia's Man of the Year

It's been a stellar year for the South African-born, Australian-bred star who capped off a year of wins by accepting his award from GQ Australia in Sydney on Wednesday.

Arriving in an all-white Prada short suit (and in the process bucking the black-tie dress code), Sivan was all smiles according to the Daily Mail. Accepting the award from actor Ross Lynch, he said: "Thank you so much everyone. It's not lost on me the irony of me winning Man of the Year when I did drag for the first time this year. I feel more in touch with my femininity than ever. I think it speaks to a point I'd like to make, which is that my relationship with masculinity has been strange my entire life. I existed in this gray area between not being invited to sleepovers for girls' nights and not getting along with any of the boys."

An article by GQ Australia shed further light on the event, including some more of Sivan's speech.

"Unlearning and de-programming all of that has taken so many years and lots of people. I'm so lucky to have incredible women in my life. I pull so much from them, and their strength and power is something I'm in awe of."

"I also have incredible men in my life," he continued. "And the biggest thing for me has been the queer people in my life that I've met along the way. These are people I look to for self-love first and foremost, and for love of each other and love of community."

He also shared that standing up for women and the LGBTQ+ community would continue to be a priority for him.

When Sivan released his debut album "Blue Neighbourhood" back in 2015, legions of fans and critics alike took notice of the then-20-year-old and his disarmingly creative (but not quite radio friendly) material. But when his next album, "Bloom," was released three years later, it was rife with radio-ready singles, sad pop boy anthems, and even a guest spot with pop goddess Ariana Grande. As acclaimed as the album and its subsequent tour were, Sivan wouldn't release another album until 2023's "Something to Give Each Other," an album that re-situated Sivan on the charts and even earned him his first two Grammy nominations for the club-friendly, gay anthem "Rush."

When discussing "Something to Give Each Other" with GQ, Sivan gushed: "I've been so over the moon with how everything has been going. I've never really felt this way during an album release. It's been exactly what I have always dreamt of for this album, and I've never really had that before. So it's really fun to feel this creatively fulfilled."

But in the five years between albums, Sivan hardly faded from the public eye, appearing instead in films like "Boy Erased," "Three Months," and "Trolls Band Together" in addition to HBO's ill-fated (but decadently sexy) "The Idol" starring The Weeknd. There were a slew of television appearances as well, from hosting "Saturday Night Live" to appearing on "RuPaul's Drag Race" and "The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show." Speaking of "Saturday Night Live," recent host Timothée Chalamet spoofed Sivan in a skit that went viral, which is about as sure a sign as any that Sivan has, in fact, made it.

His reach has also extended far into the fashion world: the one-time face of Valentino, Sivan has been an ambassador for MAC Cosmetics, Cartier, and YSL Beauty; a model for Calvin Klein and Rihanna's Savage X Fenty Show, and a designer for Uniqlo. In short, his star burns bright across various media, making him the ideal candidate for a title like Man of the Year.
