EDGE Interview: Miz Cracker on Hosting 'A Drag Queen Christmas' – 'Everything You Want from a Drag Show'
Steve Duffy READ TIME: 5 MIN.
For nine years, "A Drag Queen Christmas" has been touring the country bringing a rotating cast of "RuPaul's Drag Queen" alums to theaters throughout the country for a dragtastic holiday celebration. What audiences come back to see are the elaborate costumes, spectacular performances and shady banter as the drag superstars celebrate the season. "A Drag Queen Christmas" is guaranteed to take you on a rollercoaster experience.
The show will feature drag queens Sasha Colby, Luxx Noir London, Jessica Wild, Marcia Marcia Marica, Trinity "The Tuck" Taylor, Jimbo, Heidi N Closet, and Alyssa Edwards, Hosting is Miz Cracker, who became a fan favorite on the 5th season of "RuPaul's Drag Race All-Stars," where she made it to the top 3 in the finals. With some 1.5 million followers on all her social media accounts, Miz Cracker describes herself as a "woman's lifestyle brand" and a vocal advocate for women's rights.
Also joining the tour on some dates is special guest singer/choreographer Todrick Hall. From "American Idol" to resident choreographer and occasional judge on "RuPaul's Drag Race," Hall is a rising star of the ages. His continuous growth as a performer and queen is followed by his release of "Quarantine Queen" in 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, featuring "Mask, Gloves, Soap, Scrub," and was the international host of Global Pride 2020.
As one audience member told the New York City Theatre's website: "The comedy was amazing. The performances were off the charts... Every queen from start to finish was a blast."
EDGE caught up with Miz Cracker for a conversation about what to expect from the holiday show, what the holidays mean for her, and what it was like to meet Bob the Drag Queen for the first time.
EDGE: This is the 9th year of the show, which makes it the longest-running drag tour in America. What does that say about the power of drag queens?
MizCracker: Well, an eight-week tour feels like it. I think there's a hunger for drag in the United States because we've been through a lot of challenges, and we all need something that's going to take our minds off the world. This show will allow us all to recharge and that is something we need during the holidays.
EDGE: Can you tell us a bit of what we can expect from this year's holiday show?
MizCracker: I think this year's show is designed to offer everything that you could want from a drag show. There are queens who are comedians, dancers, and clowns. Some may say is different from being a comedian. There are lots of queens, costumes, and backup dancers. Anything that you think about when you think of spectacle and drag, there's a little bit of it in this show.
EDGE: As hostess, what are your responsibilities?
MizCracker: My responsibilities are to keep the girls on stage. No, my responsibility as a hostess is to make sure that everyone forgets the world for just a moment so that they can laugh and return to the world feeling ready to fight for the things that fighting for.
EDGE: Do you write your own material or is the show scripted?
MizCracker: I write my own material and we're using that word loosely because there is a structure to every show and there are a few things that I say every night. To keep things interesting for me and for the world, every night is different. My favorite part of the show is talking to the audience and making sure that every single show is different and fun.
EDGE: Spill the tea on which queens may be joining you on stage.
MizCracker: There are so many, but I'll name just a few. We have Jimbo the Drag Clown, Sasha Colby, Crystal Methyd, Heidi N Closet, and so many more wonderful queens that are beloved, not just by the world, but by me. I'm very excited to work with this cast. I don't say that lightly because not every cast is easy to work with, but these are all wonderful queens.
EDGE: Will there be some costume changes for you?
MizCracker: Some changes? Well, we all know that the audience loves sparkly pretty things, so we have many sparkly things planned.
EDGE: How come the story of how you were introduced to drag is not a holiday special?
MizCracker: Oh, I know. It should be. Just a little walk through the snow and then suddenly my life changed. Meeting Bob the Drag Queen was like meeting the Ghost of Drag Future.
EDGE: What do the holidays mean to you?
MizCracker: The holidays are complicated for every queer person because as queer people, we stand on the outside. The holidays for me mean not only family but chosen family and with this tour, I'm going to be building a new chosen family. I hope the audience feels like we are welcoming them into our little chosen family even if it's just for a while.
EDGE: What are you hoping the audience will sashay from the show?
MizCracker: I hope that the audience will leave us feeling like they laughed and forgot their troubles for a minute and that they're excited to make America a little more accepting, loving, and inclusive.
EDGE: Do you have anything new and upcoming that you would like to promote?
MizCracker: After this, I'm doing a show called "A Brief History of the World and also Me." I will be touring throughout America and the world and I'm very excited about it. I am having a lot of fun promoting this show and I can't wait for everyone to see it.
