Logo Looks at Seattle Female Inmates With 'The IF Project'

EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.

On September 14, "The IF Project," a documentary directed by Kathlyn Horan ("The Indigo Girls: One Lost Day"), follows Seattle Detective Kim Bogucki as she poses the "IF" question to the inmates of the Washington Corrections Center for Women: "If there was something someone could have said or done that would have changed the path that led you to prison, what would it have been?"

The documentary is the latest in the Emmy Award-winning Logo Documentary Films 2016 slate of films.

"Since its inception, it's been our hope that Logo Documentary Films would be an outlet to tell the stories of everyday LGBT heroes and the issues that impact our world. This film is one of those stories," said Taj Paxton, Executive Producer of Logo Documentary Films.

"The IF Project" had its world premiere at the 2016 Seattle International Film Festival and received the Lena Sharpe award for Persistence of Vision. The timely documentary chronicles Det. Bogucki and former inmate Renata Abramson as they form an unlikely partnership and work with female inmates on a collection of raw and poignant essays that shed light on what led them to incarceration as well as the road to successful transition into post-prison life.

At a time when mass incarceration is a constant in today's headlines and a recent study from the Vera Institute of Justice showed that the women are the fasting growing segment of the incarcerated population with the number of women in local jails 14 times what it was in the 1970s, "The IF Project" gives voice to female inmates to speak out on the societal issues behind the staggering numbers.

Detective Bogucki and Renata Abramson continue to serve as examples of how police officers can help break the cycle of incarceration. In addition to the Logo documentary, they currently continue The IF Project by working with youth, as well as current and former inmates of the Washington Department of Corrections, to share their stories through writing.

"The IF Project" is a Logo Documentary Films / TinFish Films Production. Produced by Kathlyn Horan; Directed by Kathlyn Horan. Executive Produced by Chris McCarthy, Pamela Post, Tajamika Paxton and Sarah Barton.
