Kim Davis Watch Out! : Margaret Cho is Back, and she's 'Psycho'

A prot�g� of the late Joan Rivers and an LGBT icon, Margaret Cho boasts a versatile career that has spanned decades. As a community, we're blessed to consider Cho one of our own. Indeed, she needs very little introduction. Fiercely intelligent and painfully funny, Cho's comedy (and singing, and acting, and philanthropy et al) blends incisive social criticism with a wry humor that exposes the injustices and idiosyncrasies inherent in our culture.

She brings her "Psycho" tour to Boston's Wilbur Theater this weekend, and it promises to be a politically charged affair -- from Kim Davis and the Pope to Donald Trump, nothing is safe from Cho's acerbic wit.

Edge caught up with Cho ahead of the show this Saturday (October 10) We chatted about the future of the LGBT movement, the dire state of the GOP, why she's ditching Hillary, and her involvement with the latest season of E!'s "Fashion Police."

EDGE: The last time we caught up, it was before your 'Mother' tour came to the Wilbur in November 2013. What have you been up to since then?

Margaret Cho: So much! I started a homeless outreach to memorialize the amazing life of Robin Williams, and I mourned the loss of him and my champion, the greatest comedienne ever for me -- Joan Rivers. I've been working a lot, stepping into her shoes on 'Fashion Police,' and I've been working on 'Fresh off the Boat,' which is a new Asian-American family show. I've also designed some clothes and made a record -- so lots of different things.

EDGE: You are coming to the Wilbur Theater on October 10th as part of your 'Psycho' Tour. Are you excited to be back in Boston?

Margaret Cho: So excited!! Boston is one of my favorite places. And I always love getting down to Provincetown. I'm so excited to see my good friend [the playwright] Ryan Landry -- a true Boston legend. He was actually going to father my child, but sadly it didn't work out (Laughs) But it's a close friendship that I've had for years, and I've been involved with some of his productions. Provincetown is like my second spiritual home. And, also, Amanda Palmer, who is very representative of Boston. She and I are very, very close. So I can't wait to get back and see everyone.

EDGE: Can you give us a teaser of what you'll be discussing in the show?

Margaret Cho: Well, first of all, why the fuck is the Pope meeting with Kim Davis?!! She's a dumb cunt!!!! If the Pope really wanted to do some good, he would go and meet with survivors of rape by Catholic priests, and he would beg for forgiveness. And then he would round up all of those priests that have been redirected to other churches because of the abuse they carried out, and he would make sure that they are redirected to PRISON. That's what the Pope should do. But instead, he met with that dumb cunt Kim Davis. That's just a little teaser of what I'll be discussing! [Laughs]

EDGE: [Laughs] And going off from the Kim Davis discussion, LGBT activism is a big part of what you do. We've had a great summer with the Supreme Court decision, so what do you think is the next pressing issue is in terms of civil rights?

Margaret Cho: I feel like there are a bunch of challenges. For the LGBT community, I feel like we need to look at adoption laws. I feel like the conservatives will try to limit that. Even the Pope has said that he believes that one man and one woman should raise children. And that's just ridiculous coming from a man in a big white dress. So that's probably the biggest issue facing the LGBT community.

Another big concern is the fact that the Republicans are trying to defund Planned Parenthood. Just yesterday, a branch in Thousand Oaks was doused with gasoline and burned. So literally we're dealing with a war on women and women's healthcare. Gay or straight -- that doesn't matter. And another huge issue is the way that this country is witnessing the systematic genocide of black people by the police. That is a huge and pressing issue. And finally rape is a big concern -- that's a huge nightmare and we've just had two more Bill Cosby victims step forward.

And I'm so proud to be playing at the Wilbur, because Cosby was scheduled to appear in a show there but it was cancelled because people didn't want to support him. It just shows how Boston does not do injustice. Boston is one of the most honest and righteous cities in the world, and I'm so proud to do shows here.

Passionate about politics

EDGE: Obviously you're passionate about politics, and we have an election coming up. What are your thoughts on some of the candidates ... especially Donald Trump?!

Margaret Cho: He's a travesty!! He's a joke!!! It's like when Joaquin Phoenix decided he didn't want to be an actor anymore and that he wanted to be a hip hop artist and he acted all crazy, and then it became apparent that it was for a mockumentary. I feel like this is just a long promotional piece for a new reality show or something. I'm afraid of all the GOP candidates. I'm a long-time Hillary supporter, but I've actually shifted camps to Bernie Sanders. I know Hillary socially, so it's a little awkward for me, but this is the right thing. Hillary has already been president for eight years in the 90s. Anyone who knows Hillary knows that she was really the president. So this is something she's already done. I feel like Bernie Sanders is someone who isn't controlled by big money or corporations. I feel like he's willing to tackle social issues in an intelligent way. I like him a lot.

EDGE: As you mentioned earlier, we lost the phenomenal Joan Rivers last summer. I was wondering if you could speak more to her legacy and what she meant to you?

Margaret Cho: It was so hard, and I'm still not over it, and the same with Robin Williams too. With Joan especially, she was way into my personal life and helped me get through so much. So I'll be telling a lot of stories about her. I'm also now getting involved with 'Fashion Police,' which is such a beautiful thing to do for a family that has done so much for me. So it's a real pleasure getting to spend time with Melissa and the family over there at 'Fashion Police.'

EDGE: Do you have any thoughts on Kathy Griffin's speedy departure from 'Fashion Police?'

Margaret Cho: Yeah! Well before she left I said to her, 'bitch you better get me that job!! Because I'm the one that smells like patchouli!' (Laughs) And I'm so proud to be involved. It was just so healing for all of us, and I LOVE working with Giuliana (Rancic) and Brad (Goreski).

EDGE: You're on tour at the moment -- how long will you be touring and what's next for you after that?

Margaret Cho: The tour is pretty extensive -- we'll be all over the world. It's basically Honolulu to Antwerp. And I'll also be releasing an album right after the tour. I'm also working on a lot of stuff for television and you'll find out more about that next year. I'd also LOVE to continue my work on 'Fashion Police.'
