Inside Amy Schumer - Seasons One and Two
Christian Cintron READ TIME: 2 MIN.
"Inside Amy Schumer" could be chalked up to one of the many comedian helmed-sketch shows on Comedy Central. It could also be touted out as an amazing feminist take on comedy. Realistically, it resides somewhere in the middle.
Schumer has created some memorable sketches that will live in comedy history with some of, dare we say it, Dave Chappelle sketches. She's charming, smart, and funny. However, the degrading porno-style objectification shtick and slut-naming can get a little tired. It's one thing to satirize the objectification of women by men; it's another thing to shamelessly pander to it, especially, when the "Broad City" ladies and Sarah Silverman have taken a unique and empowering approach to women in comedy on the same network.
The bonus features make Schumer way more likable especially to folks on the fence. You see her level of commitment and the amount of work she puts into her show. Seeing someone realize their dream is pretty touching, especially for behind-the-scenes clips. The web series "Behind Amy Schumer" shows her process in developing the comedy, and gives us glimpses of her writing jokes for the stand up segments, as well as moments with her on tour. You see her loyalty in hiring a group of great comedians that also happen to be her good friends. It's impressive to see the commitment level and the stick-to-itiveness.
The DVD set includes both seasons without all the annoying bleeps. There's also some unaired sketches that you could see wouldn't work on basic cable. They have also included the full stand up tapings that lead to the segments on the series.
All in all, the series is entertaining. The bonus features are entertaining on their own, which is impressive for a cable series. Regardless of its success or failure in the gender politics arena, the series is undoubtedly funny.
