GOP Congressman: No Gays in Military; They'll Want Massages

A Republican congressman from Texas is making headlines this week after saying during a conservative radio show Wednesday that gay men shouldn't serve in the military because they'll want massages, which leaves them open to terrorism.

According to Right Wing Watch, Rep. Louie Gohmert was a guest on the "Point of View" radio show when he started ranting about ancient Greece, saying it "is not a good idea" for gay men and women to serve in the military.

His rant started when Gohmert criticized the Obama administration's decision to send thousands of U.S. military to Western Africa to help control the Ebola outbreak, which somehow led the conservative politician to rail against the repeal of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, which barred men and women from openly serving in the military.

"I've had people say, 'Hey, you know, there's nothing wrong with gays in the military. Look at the Greeks,' " he told "Points of View" host Kerby Anderson. "Well, you know, they did have people come along who they loved that was the same sex and would give them massages before they went into battle.

"But you know what, it's a different kind of fighting, it's a different kind of war and if you're sitting around getting massages all day ready to go into a big, planned battle, then you're not going to last very long," Gohmert continued. "It's guerrilla fighting. You are going to be ultimately vulnerable to terrorism and if that's what you start doing in the military like the Greeks did ... as people have said, 'Louie, you have got to understand, you don't even know your history.' Oh yes I do. I know exactly. It's not a good idea."

Gohmert did not explain why gay military members would need massages over their straight counterparts, however.

Earlier this month, Gohmert made headlines after appearing on Glenn Beck's radio show, saying the Centers for Disease and Control and Democrats around that nation are throwing female nurses "under the bus" in trying to control the Ebola virus in Dallas, Salon reports.

"You know, it's a shame that the CDC head, [Tom] Frieden, is apparently the commander of the Democrats' new war on women nurses," Gohmert said. "Because, good night, they set them up, and then they throw them under the bus."
