Instagram Will Start Hiding Likes for Some US Users

Tuesday November 12, 2019

Instagram is about to make a big change.

CNN is reporting that the popular social media platform is going to start hiding likes for some users in the United States. Instagram has been testing an option to hide likes in some international markets but the move is now coming to American users.

Instagram, which Facebook owns, has already tried hiding likes in Canada, Ireland and Australia. Likes, of course, are a way of measuring how popular a photo is — the more likes, the more successful the post is. That's pretty useful for social media influencers and celebrities who often sell sponsored content on their accounts.

CNN writes that the total number of likes, which appear as hearts on Instagram, will vanish from users' main feed, profile pages and permalink pages. The owner of the account can still see their own likes but followers will not be able to see the likes. Its unclear how many Instagram users in the U.S. will be impacted by the change as chief Adam Mosseri said the likes will disappear for "some" this week.
