'Sense8' Star Brian J. Smith Comes Out in New Interview

Thursday November 7, 2019

Actor Brian J. Smith, who starred in the queer sci-fi Netflix series "Sense8," came out in a new interview with Attitude.

The actor is the cover story for the magazine's December issue and is opening up about his sexuality and accepting himself.

"Forget about any LGBTQ union or groups. There was absolutely nothing. I was completely alone," Smith, 38, told Attitude. "I heard all the names: pussy, faggot. I could never be who I was. I was constantly having to check myself and make sure I wasn't looking at someone too long or making someone feel uncomfortable.

"I had to be very, very careful about telling people the truth about myself," Smith added.

He said when he did come out to his parents eight years ago, he was "surprised" to find that they were supportive.

"...they were wonderful. They said they were just waiting for me to say something," he told Attitude. "They were a lot more advanced than I gave them credit for. " think that's when I became OK with it, too. Just in terms of being, 'Oh that's the world, it's not as dangerous as I thought it was.'"

Over on Instagram, Smith shared the story with his followers, writing: "Good morning, world. The folks at @attitudemag reached out and I knew it was time. Hoping there's other people out there like me (and not like me!) who can relate. Nothin but love! Now let's go party."

Smith has appeared on a number of TV shows, including "Gossip Girl," "Stargate Universe," and the Jason Bourne spinoff "Treadstone." He also played Chicago cop Will Gorski on "Sense8."
