Alice
One of the strangest trends of Twilight Time Movies, a home entertainment company that releases limited edition Blu-rays that cap at 3,000 units, is their apparent obsession with the filmography of Woody Allen. There are nearly a dozen Allen titles currently available on the Twilight Time website, and it seems as if a new one is added every month.
This is certainly a subjective opinion, and not one that's meant to discredit Allen's often-impressive (early) filmography, but perhaps Twilight Time should read the room by examining the current climate of the entertainment industry and sexual abuse. Aside from hardcore Allen fans and avid cinephile collectors, is anyone truly demanding these films? Considering Allen's "Stardust Memories" was released on Twilight Time nearly two years ago and still hasn't sold out of its 3,000 units, perhaps the company should lay off on restoring and releasing Allen's films for a while.
Alas, we have yet another Woody Allen release from Twilight Time for the new year -- his 1990 film "Alice." A story of magical realism and disenchantment, Mia Farrow stars as the title character, a New York woman whose life changes when she meets a mysterious Chinese herbalist (Keye Luke) who provides her with potions that lead her on a journey of self-reflection. The ensemble is rounded out by Alice's condescending husband (William Hurt), a carefree musician who Alice forms a romance with (Joe Mantegna) and the ghost of a former lover (Alec Baldwin).
It's a perfectly fine Allen entry, and its one that looks and sounds quite remarkable in this Twilight Time release. Bonus features include an Isolated Music & Effects Track, as well as a theatrical trailer. Is it a necessary restoration? That's all in the eye of the beholder. Let's see if those 3,000 units have sold out two years from now.
